We find ourselves living in what some call “the new normal” , social distancing makes it difficult for us to indulge in our most basic human nature which is to connect with other people albeit physically or emotionally. If it were not for the internet this situation we find ourselves in, would be a much darker time!
Luckily we live in the age where social media and online interactions are a normal part of our daily lives, facebook, instagram, zoom these are all tools that we can use in the fight against not only boredom but also the feelings of loneliness and separation that so often crop up for expecting or new moms. From the comfort and safety of your own home you can now connect with people right across the globe ( literally) in a time where we are all scared of what’s happening in the world outside but sometimes what seems more terrifying is what’s happening in your own home or mind.
Adding to our fun list of things most people don’t talk about – The Baby Blues.
70-80% of new mothers experience some or all of these symptoms within 3 – 5 days after birth:
- Weepiness or crying for no apparent reason
- Insomnia (even when the baby is sleeping)
- Mood changes
- Poor concentration
No one knows exactly where the baby blues stems from but the common logic being we blame our old friend hormones. These feelings are completely normal for up to two weeks post partum so do not judge yourself too harshly.
Ride this hormonal rollercoaster out by making sure you are taking care of yourself and communicating with your partner and most importantly connecting with your village of supportive moms, family or friends either by regular calls, texts, zoom meetings, carrier pigeon or even just reading the same experiences that other moms are going through on social media. Our facebook group is the perfect place to come and vent or just get some love from all the other mama’s out there!
